STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 50-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a witness said she was hit by a car while walking her dog across the street in New Dorp. The female, who lives on Staten Island, is in critical condition with body trauma at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, where she was transported by EMS following the pedestrian crash shortly before 7 a.m. on Saturday where Richmond Road meets Amboy Road. The woman was unconscious and unresponsive when police arrived at the scene.

The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is probing the crash, which so far has resulted in no arrests or summons, according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. The preliminary investigation indicated that the woman was crossing in the crosswalk at the intersection when she was struck by a 72-year-old male driver who was making a left turn from Richmond Road in a gray, 2014 Toyota Tacoma, the police spokesman said. The driver, who also lives on Staten Island, remained at the scene, police said.

The driver was turning left from Richmond Road to continue on Richmond toward New Dorp Lane when his truck struck the woman, who was walking with her dog in the crosswalk from east to west at 6:49 a.m., said witness Alondra Barrera of Port Richmond. The woman made it about halfway through the intersection when she was hit and catapulted into the air by the impact, before landing on the asphalt. The victim appeared to have a serious injury to her head and seemed to be going in and out of consciousness and the driver looked like he was in shock, Barrera said.

Barrera, whose was riding in a black SUV right behind the truck, called 911. Two female Good Samaritans administered CPR and other first aid until first responders arrived, Barrera said. The crosswalk ends at a triangle of green space separating the north and south lanes of Richmond Road from a right turn lane heading towards Richmond Road west.
