Cleveland shooting victim hitches ride on stranger’s semi to escape suspected shooter

CLEVELAND, Ohio A 30-year-old man who was shot at least three times jumped onto a semi truck in order to escape the gunfire, police reports say. The 30-year-old man was shot at least twice in his left leg and once on the lower left side of his stomach. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment. The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4600 block of Case Court, near East 40th Street.

The 30-year-old man ran from the shooting and jumped onto the passenger side of a Florida driver’s semi truck. The truck driver told police he was in the area after he got lost. The 30-year-old man grabbed onto the side mirror. He told the driver that he had just been shot and the shooters were following him, police reports say. The truck driver saw police cruiser’s lights and sirens that were following the suspected shooter’s car. The driver pulled up next to the officers, who gave the man medical treatment until an ambulance arrived.

A Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority police officer heard the gunfire and watched a man and woman run to a white 2007 Ford Edge SUV. The officer broadcast the description of the SUV and other officers quickly tracked it down on East 55th Street near Crayton Avenue. Officers saw a loaded black handgun in the pocket behind the driver’s seat, where a 23-year-old man was sitting. The man and the 21-year-old woman driving the SUV were arrested on suspicion of felonious assault, police said. They have not been formally charged and declined to give a statement to police.

Police are testing their clothes for gunshot residue.

Investigators found the 30-year-old man’s left shoe, blood and bullet casings in front of an apartment complex, where police believe the shooting happened.
