13 killed in Tirupati accident had come to file complaint against sand mafia

More than a dozen people were killed[1] after a lorry rummaged through a stretch on Srikalahasti Highway, 25 kilometres away from Tirupati[2]. The driver reportedly lost control, rammed the lorry into an electric pole and crushed people outside the Yerpedu police station. Incidentally, most of the victims had come to seek action against rampant sand mining[3] in the locality.

The speeding truck crushed at least 6 people while others died due to electrocution after the lorry rammed into an electric pole bringing it down along with live wires.

At least 25 people were injured in the incident including policemen. All injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Reports suggest that at least 13 who were killed had visited the police station to protest against illegal[4] sand mining in the locality.

All victims are said to be natives of Munagalapalem.

The police have deemed it a case of an accident.
