The man, who is believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his legs following the crash on Tuesday afternoon. The A19 was closed Southbound for more than four hours while emergency services dealt with the incident which occurred near the slip road for the A183 in Sunderland. There were massive delays for motorists as the Northbound carriageway was also temporarily closed to allow an air ambulance to land.

Despite the presence of the helicopter from the Great North Air Ambulance Service, the man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by road after being assessed by doctors. A spokesperson for the GNAAS said that he arrived in a stable condition. The spokesperson said:

“The Great North Air Ambulance Service was called to the A19 near the Washington junction after a collision involving a van and a lorry.

“The van driver, believed to be in his late 20s, suffered lower limb injuries and was treated by the GNAAS doctor-led trauma team before being taken to hospital by road, accompanied by the air crew.

“GNAAS worked alongside fire and rescue, ambulance personnel and the police.”

They added that his injuries were described as “serious”.
