Camaro driver critical, passenger dies in I-95 wreck

Two sets of emergency lights were flashing when a Camaro driver lost control on Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach early Friday and rammed a Road Ranger truck, authorities said. The Camaro’s driver, Jose Alvarez Rodriguez, 26, of West Palm Beach, was critically injured and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, a Florida Highway Patrol[1] spokesman said.

His passenger, Gretel Maria Mendez-Vega, 22, died at the scene. It was 3:13 a.m. and the Road Ranger truck, a 2017 Isuzu, was parked in the median behind a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser. Both had emergency lights activated when the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro “lost control and slid sideways,” said Sgt.

Mark Wysocky, the spokesman.

When the Camaro rammed the truck, it in turn hit the rear end of the cruiser, a 2014 Dodge Charger, Wysocky said. The truck driver was not injured. The trooper, Cedric Mitchell, had minor injuries and was taken to JFK Medical Center, Wysocky said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
