Driver charged in wreck on Indian River Road; one woman dead, another injured


One woman is dead and another is in critical condition after a Friday afternoon car crash on Indian River Road in Virginia Beach . A driver is facing charges. At 3:19 p.m., an eastbound box truck lost control on the 2400 block of Indian River Road and overcorrected, crossing the center line, according to a news release from the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The truck hit an SUV headed west, killing its driver . The passenger was airlifted to a hospital, where she is in critical condition, police said. The delivery truck driver, identified by police as Jerode Demetrius Johnson, 31, had a minor injury that didn’t require further treatment.

He is in police custody and was taken to the Virginia Beach jail. Johnson, of Norfolk, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, maiming as a result of DUI, felony hit and run resulting in a death, DUI first offense and driving on a suspended operator’s license. Further charges are pending.

Virginia Beach police’s fatal crash team is investigating .

The crash closed Indian River Road for a portion of the afternoon as the box truck lay on its side, blocking both lanes.

Virginia Beach police have not identified the dead woman, citing a policy of waiting 24 hours after notifying next of kin to release the identity to the public.
