Eleven migrants including boy, seven, found crammed among oranges in supermarket lorry in Gravesend

A group of suspected illegal immigrants have been found crammed among fruit and vegetables in a refrigerated lorry. A seven-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being discovered among 11 people in the car park of a supermarket in Gravesend, Kent, last night. Police arrested a 54-year-old man on suspicion of assisting illegal entry to the UK.

The boy was later discharged from hospital and the group were taken to a Home Office immigration[1] centre. A picture released by Kent Police[2] appeared to show a man lying in a small gap between the roof of the lorry and boxes of oranges and garlic. A force spokesman said officers were called to “a report of a number of suspected migrants in a refrigerated lorry in a supermarket car park” in London Road, Northfleet, at 11.32pm.

He added: “Officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and a boy was taken to hospital as a precaution. “He was later discharged and the group were taken to the Home Office immigration enforcement facility. “A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting illegal entry to the UK and currently remains in custody.”

Police would not identify the supermarket where the group were found.
