The most read story of the day was the tragic news that the body of a newborn baby was found in Manor Park, Aldershot.[1] News of a jackknifed lorry in Woking appeared to raise a lot of interest – perhaps because it was the SECOND jackknifed lorry we reported on during the day.[2][3] Lots of you read the brave words of a Guildford rape victim[4] after Avan Mogridge was given a 14-year prison sentence[5] for the rape, which happened in October 2016.

Aldershot Manor Park: Police video appeal for mother to come forward, amid ‘concern for welfare’ after body of ‘newborn baby’ found

The police tape in Aldershot reads ‘crime scene – do not enter’

An urgent appeal has been released by Hampshire Constabulary to trace the mother of a ‘newborn baby’ who was found dead in Aldershot’s Manor Park[7] . Detective Superintendent Darren Rawlings issued a direct appeal to the mother of the baby to get in touch – “extremely concerned” about her welfare. The park was cordoned off by police at around 1.30pm after the body was found among bushes in the park.

HUGE jackknifed lorry blocking Woking road causes rush hour chaos for commuters

According to one officer at the scene, the driver attempted to go under a height restricted bridge

A massive lorry has completely blocked a road in Woking[8] and caused delays as the rush hour commute sets in.

Reports of the huge jackknifed vehicle stuck in the middle of Smarts Heath Road first surfaced at around 3pm on Friday afternoon (May 19).

Up to three Surrey Police[9] cars attended the scene.

It is believed the lorry driver attempted to turn around after realising the large vehicle would not be able to fit underneath the railway bridge. This is the second jackknifed vehicle of the day. An earlier lorry was “wedged” in Worplesdon Road after attempting to avoid a height restricted bridge.[10][11]

“My life turned upside down and my dreams disappeared,” said victim of ex-soldier rapist

A rape victim has said her “dreams disappeared” after being violently attacked and raped in Guildford[12] in October.

On Friday (May 19), Avan Mogridge, of Church Street in Stamford, was sentenced to 18 years for raping and threatening to kill an 18-year-old woman in Guildford in October 2016. Mogridge dragged the victim to a woodland copse[13] where he raped, sexually assaulted and threatened to kill her. He was sentenced to 18 years behind bars, 14 of which custodial with four years on licence.

In a statement read out in court, the victim spoke of the impact the violent attack has had on her life.

The victim said the day she was raped changed her life so much that she is now scared to leave her home, does not sleep and is frightened for her future.

Incredible archive images reveal Guildford’s long lost subterranean Gothic pub

Friary Meux barrels in the Blackfriars

Many may not know it, but Guildford has a Gothic secret. Where fashion retailer Urban Outfitters now sits was once The Blackfriars pub, which gained itself a dark reputation. Now one of the towns often forgotten “lost pubs”, it was built in 1981 within the original footprint of the Friary Centre, hiden underneath a ramped walkway leading into the centre above.

The exterior of the pub included a circular paved seating area for eating and drinking, whilst the interior was influenced heavily by a Gothic styling – a nod back to the Dominican Friary which had once stood on the site.

The pub finally declared last orders in 1989, when plans to extended the retail capacity of the shopping centre surrounding it came to fruition.
