A worried resident told how her house shook when a blazing lorry exploded a quarter of a mile away today. Engineer Michelle Pullen, from Hinckley[2], said she was just going up to bed at midnight last night when she heard the loud bang. Michelle, who lives in Hinckley, said: “I was walking upstairs to bed when there was an explosion and the whole house shook.

“I looked out of the bedroom window and could see massive flames coming from the direction of the A47[3]. “I grabbed my camera and set off across the fields to find out what was going on.” Read more: Driver’s lucky escape as car flips onto roof in Leicester city centre

Ms Pullen, who also works as a professional photographer, said she arrive at the scene to see firefighters with breathing apparatus tackling a lorry fire. Fire crews were called out at 11.36pm yesterday to the A47 Dodswell Road by the driver after the lorry burst into flames.

Ms Pullen said: “I got within 25 yards of the fire. “The flames were very high and there were explosions happening all the time. “It was quite scary really.

I was there for about an hour as they used foam to try to put the flames out. “The wind changed direction so I left because I have no idea what was burning in that fire.”

Four fire crews tackled the blaze until 5.30am. Motorists were diverted until about 9.15am. Police advised drivers to find another route as Dodwells Road, between Wykin Road and Roston Drive, was closed for recovery and road repairs.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are not sure what was on the load but there was nothing hazardous. “We know there were kitchen units and turf on it for sure. “Thankfully, the driver is fine.”

A fire service spokeswoman said: “The HGV was well alight when we got there. “The fire was deep seated in the engine. We did not get the stop message on the fire until 5.30am.”

A police spokesperson said: “Dodwells Road near to Wykin Road is currently closed due to a lorry fire.

“Carriageway repairs were being undertaken.”
