He’d obviously been in the truck as it rolled over and he’d climbed out through the windscreen.” The driver called the company from a nearby resident’s home. Hutchinson said Environment Canterbury (ECan) was alerted about the crash immediately.

“We rang them as soon as we knew the truck had come off the road and we will work with them and the police with the recovery operation.” Police attended the scene, but said it was too dark and wet to begin a recovery operation on Wednesday evening, Hutchinson said. He could not see any sign of effluent spillage at the sight or in the stream.

The driver had been on a scheduled run to service a portable toilet on a building site in Okains Bay at the time of the crash.

Hutchinson said the truck had a 750-litre tank and the driver had serviced two other portable toilets before the crash. ECan Christchurch, West Melton and Banks Peninsula zone manager James Tricker said the property owner confirmed drinking water supplies were uphill from the crash site and were unaffected. He did not know how much spillage there had been, but said staff would be at the site from about 8am on Thursday to take samples of the stream and assess the environmental impact.
