Drinkers free lorry driver after he crashes outside Wingfield Farm pub

A lorry has toppled onto its side on a roundabout near the Humber Bridge[1] causing heavy delays for motorists. The HGV was making its way round the Boothferry roundabout in Hessle[2] when it went over on its side with eyewitnesses reporting that the driver had to be rescued by people who were enjoying the sun at Wingfield Farm.

The vehicle then started leaking oil, according to Wendy Pahlen who turned up at the pub just after the lorry toppled over.

She said: “We got here about 6.40pm and we saw oil spilling out of the side of the lorry – it was really gushing out of the side. “People who were at the pub managed to drag the driver out on to the pavement and this was all before the emergency services arrived.”

Since the incident, police officers have been directing traffic cautiously around the roundabout which serves Boothferry Road, the A164 and the Humber Bridge.

Three crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue[3] are also in attendance.

It’s not known whether the driver of the vehicle suffered any injuries as a result of the lorry falling on to its side.

The incident is likely to cause delays for motorists with Humber Roads Police[4] tweeting that motorists who are looking to head south from Hull should expect queues of traffic.
