Driver dumps burning trash onto empty Sonoma State parking lot

A quick-thinking driver dumped a load of burning trash onto an empty Sonoma State University parking lot Thursday before it could set his garbage truck ablaze, fire officials said. The North Bay Corp. garbage driver pulled into the Rohnert Park campus just before 5 p.m. after noticing the flames, Rancho Abode Fire Capt. Jimmy Bernal said.

The unidentified man dumped the waste onto the college’s main parking lot off East Cotati Avenue, where firefighters later were able to extinguish the fire. “It was good thinking on his part,” Bernal said of the truck driver. Columns of smoke could be seen from as far as Penngrove, Bernal said.

He said they used a backhoe to help extinguish the flames.

Bernal said the fire was likely started by hot embers, possibly after someone improperly disposed of a firecracker.

No one was injured, and the garbage truck suffered little damage, he added.
