Officials chase down tanker dumping chemical waste

Hyderabad: A tanker that was illegally dumping chemical waste into Musi river near Kuntloor area was caught after a long chase by the officials of the Telangana State Pollution Control Board on Friday night. A team of officials from PCB comprising chief environmental engineers, P Vishwanatham and D Krupanandam, along with AEE Ramappa Siddi, were on night patrol between Pedda Amberpet and Nagole road when they came across the truck discharging the chemical waste surreptitiously into Musi. Spotting the patrol team, the truck driver tried to speed away and was finally caught after a chase over six km.

The driver and owner of the tanker who were taken into custody admitted that the effluents were from Ortin laboratories at Malkapuram in Choutuppal.

“They were dumping chemicals from the unit and this was the third time they were going to discharge the waste into Musi,” N Raveender, senior environmental scientist, TSPCB said.

The officials seized the tanker and the matter was informed to the member secretary of TSPCB. “As cautioned earlier, orders have been issued to close the industry immediately,” Raveender said.
