The AZ business fleet guide – Q is for Qualifications

AD From a basic driver’s licence, right the way through to a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for HGV lorry drivers, there are various qualifications to take into account in the world of business fleet. Businesses have a duty of care to ensure their staff, when out on the road, are best placed to avoid risks.

This is for both their own personal safety and the reputation of the business. The qualifications required are largely based on the kind of vehicles being driven. Larger vehicles will require more substantial training and testing.

Additional safety-based training across the entire company could help reduce both the cost of insurance and produce improvements in fuel consumption and car depreciation. Evidence has shown that Britain is suffering from a shortfall in qualified fleet drivers, especially those capable of commanding haulage vehicles. The Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association said in 2015 that the haulage industry was short of about 45,000 drivers.

There is also training and subsequent qualifications available for those running the fleet operations of a particular business. The Commercial Vehicle Fleet Management Qualification is one example of this and should ensure fleet professionals have the knowledge and experience to make important decisions. Small and medium-sized businesses need to stay on top of what qualifications are required by law and ensure any updates or changes are adhered to.

The proliferation of new innovation such as driverless technology, improved satellite navigation and sustainable fuels may also determine that new qualifications are necessary.
