Truck driver booked for ‘siphoning off’ rice

The Mehta police have booked a truck driver of Gurdaspur for allegedly siphoning off of rice worth Rs 3.30 lakh. Though the incident took place on May 20, a complaint in this regard was lodged with the police yesterday.

The accused has been identified as Tarsem Masih, a resident of Bariyar village in Gurdaspur. A case under Section 420, 468, 471, 474 and 406 of the IPC has been registered against him.

No arrest has been made so far. Kulwant Singh, a resident of Gukhuwal village in Gurdaspur, told the police, “On May 20, around 100-quintal rice was loaded from the FCI godown in Mehta. The rice was to be transported to Srinagar.

Masih, before loading the rice on his truck, kept all documents related to it with him. But the truck did not reach the destination.” Later, the documents provided by Masih were found to be forged.

It took no time for the complainant to guess that the rice was stolen by the accused.

He allegedly sold all rice in Jammu after crossing the Lakhanpur border.

Gurnam Singh, who is investigating the case, said investigations were under progress and efforts were on to arrest the culprit.
