Truck driver killed while helping Upstate couple on side of Florida interstate

A Florida truck driver was killed after stopping to help an Upstate family whose car crashed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 95. The Florida Highway Patrol reported Efrain Merced, 59, saw a car on its side after it hit a guardrail in the highway median early Tuesday. Advertisement

He pulled over onto the highway shoulder and was then struck by Christopher Doobs, 24, of New Jersey, as Merced tried to assist two South Carolina adults and two children in the car. The accident began when a car was trying to pass Rodrine Buffaloe, 40, of Simpsonville, and clipped her bumper. The car drove off as Buffaloe’s car veered off the highway.

Buffaloe, her husband, Leon, 46, and their children, ages 6 and 5, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
