Wrong-way driver killed in fiery crash with tow truck

SAN DIEGO — A wrong-way driver was killed early Saturday in a crash on northbound Interstate 5 in San Diego. At 12:10 a.m., a sports car was reportedly traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in the area of National Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car crashed into a tow truck, setting both vehicles on fire.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tow truck was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center to be treated for severe traumatic injuries and burns, according to San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Ted Moran.

The crash prompted the closure of all northbound lanes and two lanes on the southbound side.
