Driver critically hurt, business damaged, neighbors terrified after three-vehicle crash on near eastside

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – At least one man was rushed to the hospital with “very critical” injuries following a three-vehicle collision Saturday around 6:30 a.m. near East Michigan and North Rural Streets, east of Downtown Indianapolis, police confirmed.

Authorities said the unidentified man was behind the wheel of a pickup truck and disregarded a traffic light. A second vehicle – a white box truck – subsequently hit a parked, unoccupied car and crashed into the side of a building, causing significant damage to a business.

Nobody inside the building was hurt, according to police.

The extent of the box truck driver’s injuries are unknown but “not critical,” investigators at the scene said.

The pickup truck continued down the street, eventually hitting the parked car and coming to rest in front of a house two blocks west of the Rural Street intersection.

“I was asleep in my room right in the front of the house,” said Kourtnie Kessinger, surveying the wreckage in her front yard in disbelief. “I’ve never seen a crash like this [in my neighborhood] in my time living here.”

She and other neighbors attempted to help the driver of the pickup truck exit his vehicle, but were unable to do so before police arrived.

“He was unconscious and it took [first responders] about half an hour to cut him out,” Kessinger told 24-Hour News 8. “The other driver [of the box truck] was walking on his own.”

Her housemates, Dale Williams and Rachael Spivey, also said they had never seen “anything this bad” in the area, but revealed reckless drivers frequently sped down East Michigan, side-swiping – and crashing into – parked vehicles.

“Most people [who live] out here don’t even park in front of their homes anymore,” said Williams.

Spivey sat outside for hours – unable to reenter her home due to the ongoing police investigation – and watched as authorities photographed a broken traffic sign, piles of shattered glass and pieces of twisted metal strewn on the ground steps from her front yard.

“I’m thinking about moving now,” she said. “It’s that bad.”
