CHP: Wrong-way driver dies in head-on wreck with semi truck

A wrong-way driver died after they collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 5 early Thursday morning near Corning.

Alcohol is being considered a factor in the wreck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unnamed driver was driving south in the northbound lane of I-5 in a 2000 Honda Civic when they collided with a 2011 Volvo 2-axle semi-truck hauling double trailers, according to CHP.

Both Red Bluff and Willows CHP officers were notified of the wrong-way driver by dispatch at 3:17 a.m. who was going south of Liberal Avenue near Corning.

A few minutes later, John Wahl, 64, from Redding, was driving north in his semi-truck at 50 mph when he passed up another truck in the second lane. Both trucks were driving north, while the driver of the Honda Civic was going south, according to Jake Bushey with CHP.

The truck driver in the second lane swerved onto the shoulder, while the driver of the Honda Civic swerved into the first lane and collided with Wahl’s truck. He was struck head-on and died at the scene.

Wahl and the driver of the Honda Civic were wearing their seat belts during the wreck. The Honda Civic had major damage and stopped in the center median. Wahl’s truck had major damage and was disabled, with the rear trailer partially blocking a northbound lane. A fuel tank from the truck was ruptured, spilling about 50 gallons on the roadway and into the center median.

One lane remained closed until 8:12 a.m. as road crews cleaned up fluids and debris.

Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call the Red Bluff CHP Area Office at (530) 527-2034.
