8-vehicle crash on on Hwy 401 closed road for hours

Police are reminding drivers of the importance of paying attention and driving with care following a multi-vehicle collision that injured several people and closed a portion of the 401 during rush hour on Monday. Around 5:17 p.m. emergency crews responded to a multi-vehicle crash near the Dorchester Road off ramp, just east of London. Eight vehicles were involved, with several people injured and debris and damaged vehicles blocking all three lanes of the highway, effectively closing it for more than two hours. Provincial police said Tuesday the driver of a Ford pickup truck collided with a silver Honda car in the fast lane, which caused a chain reaction of collisions that involved six other vehicles. A 21-year-old man has been charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. Drivers must use due care and attention otherwise accidents can happen (and can be charged with careless driving), said Middlesex OPP Const. Liz Melvin. Driving is a privilege and the allegations are that (the driver of the pickup) wasn t driving with due care and attention. Melvin said after investigating the police had reasonable grounds to lay the charge and upon conviction, the man would get a $490 fine and six demerit points. The Honda, and the other vehicles involved, had been merging because of lane restrictions from nearby construction, and had either been stopped or travelling slowly on the highway. The construction contributed in the sense that the vehicles were stopped and slowed, but each driver had to use due care and attention, said Melvin. Drivers should always be aware of construction zones and whatever speed limits are posted and drive accordingly. The stretch of the highway where the incident occurred is set for nearly three years of roadwork that will see bridge replacement and interchange improvements at three consecutive exits at Westchester Bourne, Dorchester Road and Elgin Road between 2017 and 2019. As many as 70,000 vehicles a day travel east and west down that stretch of highway, one of the busiest roads and trade corridors in the country. Those three bridges are just the most concentrated stretches where major roadwork will slow traffic during the next few years: First on the list, with a start late this year or early next year, is revamping the interchange at Highway 401 and Veterans Memorial Parkway. After that, the Highbury Avenue/401 interchange will be rebuilt. Then bridges over Pond Mills Road and CN rail will be repaired. A project to reconstruct the 401 and Highway 4/Colonel Talbot Road interchange is going through environmental approval. Monday s incident saw several injuries, but none were reported as life-threatening. The pickup driver had non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the silver Honda, a 65-year-old London man, had to be extricated from his car and was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other charges were laid. [email protected] [1] References ^ [email protected] (www.lfpress.com)
