Update: truck driver dead in fiery 401 crash

Provincial police say one person is dead in a fiery crash early Wednesday near Gananoque when a transport truck collided with a stationary construction vehicle on Highway 401. The OPP confirmed Wednesday afternoon the truck driver was killed in the collision. Westbound lane closures will remain in effect into Wednesday evening. Motorists are asked to follow the detours as the investigation continues. Although initial reports referred to a multi-vehicle collision, the incident in fact involved a transport truck and a stationary safety vehicle that held a flashing sign indicating the start of a construction zone, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Sandra Barr. Police did not have details on the contents of the truck s load but it did not appear to be a flammable material, added Barr. It (fire) would have been the impact from the truck itself, said Barr. OPP technical traffic collision investigators were at the scene. There was no one inside the stationary vehicle at the time, she added.

Trailer hauling hazardous materials explodes on I-94

BILLINGS, Mont. A trailer hauling hazardous materials burst into flames and exploded, causing a grass fire along Interstate 94 in Montana. The Montana Highway Patrol says a FedEx semitractor was towing three trailers east of Billings Wednesday afternoon when an apparent brake system malfunction caused the fire. Trooper Joshua French says another driver flagged down the truck driver to alert him to the fire. The driver was unable to extinguish the fire, so he disconnected the trailers and moved the semitractor away. One trailer was holding six one-pound containers of organic peroxide. Worden Volunteer Fire Chief Lance Taylor says the trailer exploded three times before firefighters arrived, sparking a fire that burned 5 acres of grass alongside the road. Taylor says the driver also was hauling unidentified vaccines and candy. The truck driver was not injured.

Sleeper scooped into recycling truck suffers leg fracture

ALBANY, Ore. — Police say a man in Oregon who was compacted with recycled material after falling asleep in a bin has survived with just a leg fracture. The Albany Democrat-Herald [1] reports the 23-year-old was listed in good condition at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Corvallis. Albany police Capt. Eric Carter says the truck driver became aware of the situation Thursday morning when the victim started throwing cardboard out the back of the truck. The driver got out to take a look and heard the man yelling. Carter says a similar incident happened five years ago in Albany, when the body of a 50-year-old homeless man was discovered in a load of cardboard left at a waste sorting station.
