Volvo Group invests in truck platooning technology …

GREENSBORO, N.C. Volvo announced today it has invested, through its Volvo Group Venture Capital subsidiary, in truck platooning pioneer Peloton Technology. Peloton has developed an integrated safety, efficiency and analytics platform that builds upon advanced collision mitigation and adaptive cruise control technologies, to allow truck platooning.

It electronically couples trucks through a combination of vehicle-to-vehicle communications, radar-based active braking systems and proprietary vehicle control algorithms. This allows for improved safety and fuel savings for the lead and following trucks, according to the company. Peloton Technology has assembled a stellar team and developed a technology-based platooning solution with the potential to save a significant amount of fuel and also increase safety for fleets, said Jonas Landstr m, investment director and head of the Americas for Volvo Group Venture Capital.

Volvo Group Venture Capital is focused on partnering with companies that help our customers increase their bottom line through technology-based solutions. A study of the system by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency and a major fleet, showed the lead truck improved fuel economy by more than 4% while the following vehicle saved 10%. The societal demand for reduced traffic congestion, as well as improved safety on our nation s highways, will continue to drive the need for innovative advanced technologies, such as platooning, said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North America.

Mack has had a longstanding commitment to maximizing the efficient transportation of freight, reducing the environmental footprint through alternative-fuel vehicles and the purposeful integration of technology and people.

Volvo Trucks has long been a leader in offering advanced technology to our customers, and we were the first OEM to lead a platoon, added G ran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America.

We look forward to working with Peloton Technology as they work on a platooning solution that will improve safety and fuel efficiency, while also combatting the costs associated with congestion.

Truck crushes man in Imo

FROM GEORGE ONYEJIUWA,OWERRI A middle aged man has been killed, while two others sustained serious injuries, when a trailer rammed into the perimeter fence of the Imo state Environmental Transformation Commission following a brake failure. This was just as properties worth millions of naira belonging to (ENTRACO) ranging from office furniture, television, refrigerators, documents, including part of the building were destroyed. According an eye witness account the truck with registration number XB 882 HAL, allegedly belonging to the Ibeto group and fully loaded with cement, crushed the man as it rammed into the walls of the Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO) located along Okigwe the road, in Owerri Metropolis.

He further disclosed that tragic incident happened about 12.30pm and that two other persons who were seriously injured were rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri by a good Samaritan.

However, one of the staff of the commission was said to have escaped death by whiskers as he has just left his office a few minutes earlier before the truck rammed into his office.

Speaking with newsmen at the scene, the General Manager of ENTRACO, Emeka Osuoji narrated, I was in my office around 12noon when I had a loud noise and when I came out I saw the IBETO truck already destroyed part of my office.

The day I drove a fire truck.

by Gillian Jones / Berkshire Eagle Staff When North Adams Fire Director Steve Meranti asked me if I would photograph firefighters training with an obstacle course in the parking lot behind the Big Y Supermarket, it seemed like a good photo op. Over the years, I have photographed not only the firefighters in action but during their various drills as well. Photos of today s training session After taking some photographs of the training in which drivers navigated the trucks around a tight course of cones, I introduced myself to Ken Jones of the MIIA or the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, which sponsored the training for the department.

Would you like to try driving the truck? he asked. It isn t as easy as it looks!

Oh no, I thought. Wouldn t that be a liability? According to Ken, he had done it with other reporters who covered training sessions all over the state.

As long as it was okay with the lieutenant, it was okay with him. Besides, he works for the company that insures the trucks. Accompanied by a firefighter I stepped up into the cab with my cameras and phone which I use for video.

I handled the truck ever so carefully as I navigated around the cones using the mirrors to make sure I didn t do anything to jeopardize this amazing piece of machinery. It was definitely more difficult than it looks, and I didn t even go in reverse. Probably the biggest challenge was the steering wheel which is huge and uses all your upper body to steer.

I have a brand new respect for firefighters and just driving that huge rig under stressful conditions. Hard to believe, last month I got to ride in a fire truck with Brayton Elementary School student Zach Hillard, as he enjoyed being Officer Zach for the day. Today I drove a fire truck.

Maybe if my career as a photojournalist every ends, I can train to be a truck driver.

They said I did a pretty good job of driving.

Lars Sonderg rd wins Scania’s Young Truck Driver Competition …

Lars Sonderg rd from Denmark won the exciting Young European Truck Driver final. The competition was decided in S dert lje, Sweden, on Saturday afternoon and attracted close to 10,000 spectators. Lars Sonderg rd, who participated in the YETD final for the second time, beat 25 other talented young professional drivers from countries throughout Europe.

I can t belive it, the competition was very tight, says Lars Sonderg rd. It has been fantastic to see how concentrated and focused the drivers have been during the competition, says Erik Ljungberg, Senior Vice President and head of Scania Corporate Relations. There is only one who can call himself the best young truck driver in Europe but I think all 26 can call themselves winners.

When it was time for the final exercise, the Super Z, the only three combatants left with a shot at the first prize were Patrick Schildmann, Germany and runner ups Thomas Kn sel from Switzerland and Lars Sonderg rd from Denmark. The first prize in the competition is a brand new truck from Scania, at a value of 100,000 euro. A total of more than 22,000 young truck drivers under age 35 from 26 European countries competed in Scania Young European Truck Driver.

The final took place over a two-day period and included such tests as Defensive and fuel-economy driving, Cargo securing, Check before driving, Fight the fire, Safe manoeuvring and the classic Knock the King. The contestants in the final had to prove that they had the skill and attitude of responsible heavy truck drivers as they completed a programme consisting of complex manoeuvring and obstacle tests. Scania Young European Truck Driver is a major part of a global initiative for responsible, safe driving that Scania started in 2003.

By highlighting the role of the driver, Scania also wants to attract more young people into the driving profession. The driver is absolutely the most important factor in heavy vehicle transport, says Erik Ljungberg. Vehicles and infrastructure are obviously of major significance, but fuel-efficient and safe driving is primarily a matter of human behaviour.

Through YETD, Scania wants to help raise the status of professional drivers and emphasise their great importance to the profitability of transport companies and to road safety, as well as to the reduced environmental impact. We want to help attract more young, capable drivers into the transport business. Scania s Young European Truck Driver competition has the endorsement of the European Commission and the International Road Transport Union.

Its sponsors are Michelin and Volkswagen. Scania is also running similar competitions in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The 2014/2015 competitions attracted a record number of some 100,000 contestants worldwide.

The complete list of results, as well as photos, scores from the final and an on-demand version of the final, are available on www.scania.com/YETDlive.For further information, please contact: Hans- ke Danielsson.

YETD: Belgium vs.

the Czech Republic | Scania Newsroom

The YETD final is bound to be an exciting competition where both newcomers and seasoned veterans will show off their truck driving skills. This year s lineup consists of drivers with various backgrounds and skills all of which will be tested thoroughly. Kris Agten, Belgium Michal Kyral, Czech Republic Kris Agten from Belgium has plenty of experience in YETD as he has participated in the event on five previous occasions.

Even though this is the first time he has reached the European final, Agten is familiar with the upcoming challenges. As he often drives in big, crowded cities, his manoeuvring skills are second to none. But cargo securing is one of his weaker disciplines.

Michal Kyral from the Czech Republic has participated in two national finals. He claimed 4th place in 2012 and won the 2014 competition. Kyral is a seasoned driver with many years experience.

He considers his manoeuvering skills to be his strong point, both in the competition and in his job.

However, cargo securing remains one of his weaker areas.
