Man arrested after pickup truck crashes, drags motorcycle

MONTCALM CO. — A 43-year-old Stanwood man has been charged after allegedly hitting a motorcycle and then driving off early Tuesday morning. Jeremy Gard was arraigned on one count of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death. According to Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, fire crews responded to a vehicle fire on Church Road.

While putting the fire out, crews noticed a motorcycle wedged underneath the pickup truck. Deputies on scene then learned there was a motorcycle crash at the intersection of M-82 and US-131. A Michigan State trooper went to that crash scene and found the motorcycle driver but not the motorcycle.

Deputies say the pickup truck involved in the fire had earlier collided with the motorcycle and continued to drive dragging it to Church Road. This is where the truck stopped and caught on fire. The 58-year-old Howard City motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital.

His condition is unknown at this time. Gard and his passenger were not injured in the crash or fire. Deputies arrested Gard at the scene for suspicion of operating while intoxicated, second offense.

Gard is at the Montcalm County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
