FREDERICK COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 are open again after being closed for about 12 hours after a tractor-trailer overturned near mile marker 300 on Monday morning.

State police charged 22-year-old Derek S. Crabtree, of Dante, Virginia, with reckless driving after they say the truck he was driving, hauling 33 cattle, ran off the left side of the highway and overturned in the median at about 5:28 a.m. Crabtree was treated for minor injures. Of the 33 cattle riding in the trailer, six escaped the damaged trailer and six died. Troopers had to round up some of the escaped cattle.

State police also had a local veterinarian respond to the scene to assess the conditions of those cattle injured in the crash. The veterinarian is making the necessary determinations of their treatment, which is still ongoing at this time, and advising state police on how best to manage the scene.

A roughly 12-mile detour was set up for I-81 northbound traffic. Drivers took exit 300 to follow I-66 east to exit 6 (Front Royal). They will be directed to use the ramps at this exit to get on westbound I-66 and return to I-81.
