Conway Transport Continues To Deliver

Conway Transport is committed to providing a top-class service in a wide range of transport related activities. In business for over 30 years, Conway Transport Ltd. provides fast, flexible, reliable and cost-effective delivery solutions across Ireland and beyond. Based in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, Conway Transport is committed to providing a top-class service in a wide range of transport related activities. The company is headed by Gerard Conway, who is assisted by his wife Claire and son Peter, who is operations manager. This successful family-run concern now operates a fleet of over 40 vehicles and 20 trailers from a 10,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art premises in Desmond Business Park. Due to favourable economic conditions and an increased level of business, this is soon to be extended by a third of the present site.

Conway Transport Ltd. was founded in 1990 as a limited company by Gerard and Claire Conway who had previously operated the business as a sole trader. Gerard had extensive experience as a driver in the freight business and felt that he had the necessary skills and qualities to start his own transport company. In 1984, he purchased his first van and immediately secured a contract collecting and delivering freight in the Munster area. From these humble beginnings, the company has grown from strength to strength and is now a key player in the Mid West/Kerry transport sector. This has been achieved by a continous belief of putting the customers needs at the heart of the operation. Customer satisfaction is what drives the business and success is measured by the health of a client relationship. Many of the relationships built up by Conway Transport in the early days are still in place today. The company s client base varies from local SMEs to multinational organisations many of which are house hold names. The range of services offered by the company at present include an express pallet and parcel pickup and delivery service, warehousing, general haulage, an international service, dedicated client services and more time sensitive activities such as same day delivery and AM priority deliveries. The company has also more recently branched into logistics for some of its clients. To provide this service, the company has a large modern fleet of tracked vehicles serving its clients. Secure box trailer articulated trucks and box bodied rigids make up the backbone of the fleet along with curtain sided rigid and articulated trucks including double decks. These are supported by panel vans for delivery of smaller consignments.

The business sees itself as the real gateway to the Mid West and Kerry for the rest of the country. It is also part of the Palletxpress network system where parcels and pallets are collected for next working day delivery throughout the 32 counties. Palletxpress, of which Conway Transport has been a member for a number of years, was established in 2004 with a view to streamlining and professionalising the freight distribution industry. It was a new concept in Irish road freight distribution, focusing on the movement of small consignments of palletised freight in a much more environmentally-friendly manner, and also gaining huge efficiencies from hauliers and customers alike. All matters pertaining to the movement of freight is controlled by the central hub, which is based in Ballycoolin, Co. Dublin. Conway Transport has enjoyed the benefit of a very loyal workforce, with some staff members employed for more than 20 years. Currently the daily administration and credit control of the busy office is carried out by Gerard s niece, Mary Conway, while Ger Mulcahy oversees sales and customer service. As already mentioned, the operations manager is Peter Conway who, with his roots in the transport business, brings a wealth of skills and knowledge to his position.

The company has also worked closely with Philip Godkin of Streamline Logistics Solutions in transforming its IT system which is now integrated with most of its clients systems. In recent times, challenging conditions have placed huge emphasis on controlling running costs of the business. Tight cost controls have ensured that the company has retained its market share in the face of severe competition.

Business has picked up, but improving our yield from it is proving to be quite a challenge, Ger Mulcahy says.

We have invested heavily in IT, which has helped to improve our cost structure. It is also showing us where we need to make further cost-cutting measures. Our new IT system is able to tell us whether a vehicle is making money or not. Peter Conway concludes by saying: Customers needs are changing with real time information sharing now an integral part of every business. This is a challenge but we also see this also as an opportunity to improve our customers experience which in the long run will be a positive for us also. It s a win-win situation.
