A Romanian lorry driver who smuggled 400 kilos of hand-rolling tobacco into the UK in an attempt to avoid nearly ?80,000 worth of duty tax has been jailed.
Daniel Pacurar, 32, from Ignatesti, Rosia Montana, was stopped by Border Force officers at Dover Port in October after an x-ray scan revealed irregularities in the load. Officers discovered boxes containing 400 kilos of ‘Turner’ hand-rolling tobacco in the lorry’s trailer unit behind industrial bags of aggregate.

‘Don’t let criminals profit’

Assistant Director of the Fraud Investigation Service for HMRC, Alan Tully, said: “Pacurar thought his crimes wouldn’t be discovered, but didn’t account for the x-ray scanner that revealed his hidden cargo.

“We continue to work with other enforcement agencies to reduce the availability of illicit tobacco, which costs the UK around ?2.4 billion a year in stolen revenue. “Don’t let criminals profit by undermining legitimate retailers.” Read more: It’s a Christmas miracle!
