The M5 has been closed in both directions tonight after a lorry and several other vehicles were involved in a serious crash.[1] Here’s everything we know so far – we will bring you more information tomorrow. Read: Carnage as M5 closed in BOTH directions after serious accident[2]

When did it happen?

The crash happened today at around 5.15pm – peak rush hour.

Where?

The collision took place just north of junction 10 of the M5, near Cheltenham.

What happened?

It is understood that the crash initially started out as a collision between two vehicles.

A spokesperson for the police said that due to the timing of the accident – rush hour – there were a lot of cars on the road and one of the vehicles went through the barrier which separates north and southbound carriageways. This resulted in a lot of debris on the motorway and a few ‘minor shunts.’ For safety, police had to close the motorway and people were at a standstill for around two hours.

Were there injuries?

Yes.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said that one person was taken to hospital in a serious condition. “The call came in at 5.15pm and we attended with multiple vehicles, including an air ambulance. One patient, believed to be the lorry driver, has been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol in a serious condition.”

Is the road re-open now?

No, but traffic is slowly on the move again. Trapped traffic travelling northbound was released via the hard shoulder just over an hour ago.

And traffic travelling southbound was released in the same way about 45 minutes ago. But some cars are still queuing. Highways England advised people follow diversions, which are here.[3]
