23-year-old man in critical condition after A66 crash

A 23-year-old man is in a critical condition following a crash on the A66 near Penrith this morning. The incident involving a Vauxhall Vivaro van and a HGV, happened at 6.10am at Brougham. The HGV driver, a 50-year-old man from Alvaston in Derby, sustained chest injuries which aren’t believed to be life threatening.

The driver of the van, a 23-year-old man from Alfreton in Derbyshire, was transferred by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital and is in a critical condition. The A66 remained closed until around midday while police carried out investigation work, cleared the scene and recovered the vehicles. The road has now reopened.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact police on 101.
