A BINMAN has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being crushed by his own lorry. The air ambulance, two rapid response vehicles, and a land ambulance were called to Oak Tree Grove Shaldon at noon to reports of a collision involving a recycling vehicle. The man suffered chest injuries and was flown to Derriford Hospital, an ambulance spokesman confirmed.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council added: “We can confirm that there was an incident in Shaldon yesterday involving a vehicle and a member of the recycling crew. “As a precautionary measure the casualty was taken to hospital and kept in overnight for observations. We are currently investigating the cause of this accident and would like to wish the crew member a speedy recovery.

“All waste and recycling staff are required to complete a full induction training programme and appropriate safety procedures are put in place.”

The Health and Safety Executive said it had not yet been asked to investigate.

It said the relevant authority had 10 days to make the HSE aware.
