BALES of hay fell onto one of Cumbria’s main roads after the lorry transporting them crashed into a bridge. There was slow traffic in the Kirkby Stephen area as the road was partially blocked following the collision at about 5pm yesterday . It happened on the A685 – the main road from Tebay to Kirkby Stephen, – between the A683 and Station Road.

The HGV hit the railway bridge at Midland Hill and Network Rail carried out an inspection to access the impact. The bales were retrieved by the farmer from the road. A police spokesman said: “The road was cleared but the bridge was being checked just to confirm there were no structural issues.

“This was a farmer moving some hay who has misjudged the height of the bridge.”
