Lane of the M5 northbound closed between Junction 23 Bridgwater and 22 Burnham-on-Sea following HGV crash

ONE lane of the M5 has been closed after a crash between two lorries that left one driver trapped. The crash occurred between Junction 23 Bridgwater and Junction 22 Burnham-on-Sea northbound around 10.15am today (February 16). A lorry and a car transporter were involved in the crash.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were called to the scene to rescue one of drivers who was trapped in the cab. Two fire engines from Bridgwater and one from Burnham-on-Sea were called as well as a rescue tender from Taunton[1]. Crews got to work with hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the driver.

The male driver was freed around 11.25am and was cared for by the ambulance on the scene. A spokesman from South Western Ambulance Service confirmed his injuries were minor but he was taken to Western General Hospital. Highways England have said they will need to resurface part of the road tonight where oil was spilled in the collision.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “The spillage has damaged the carriageway and will need to resurfaced overnight. Two lanes will need to be closed.” Somerset County Gazette:

Normal traffic conditions are expected to return this afternoon, however the A38[2] from North Petherton all the way up to Highbridge is reportedly heavily congested as motorists try to avoid the M5 delays.
