London traffic hell as major road gridlocked after lorry plunged off bridge and exploded

The HGV burst into flames after it crashed from Colman’s Bridge and onto a metal barrier in Wiltham, Essex, on Wednesday afternoon. Thick plumes of smoke were seen in pictures shared on Twitter billowing from the crash site. The driver of the lorry, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

One lane on the A12 London-bound remains closed with “massive queues” to get into the city. Highways authority Essex Council said there were queues back to Junction 25 on the London-bound carriageway this morning. Traffic is also moving slowly on the southbound carriageway between junctions 12 and 13.

Speaking on Wednesday one witness said: “I’m going home northbound, and I’ve come around the bend, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I saw this lorry hit the barrier on the bridge and all the metal railings were flying off like anything, and I thought, ‘Jesus, he’s going to come over’,” they said in an interview with BBC Essex. “The traffic started to slow down on the northbound of the A12, and then the lorry’s just come off the bridge, gone through the trees on the embankment, and just come all the way down and smashed onto the floor, and all the railings, all the concrete, came down onto the floor. “It’s a miracle that no cars were hit on the A12.”
