A lorry driver has been spared from prison after he ranted and raved at another driver and briefly got a knife from his cab. Aaron Coe had been driving his HGV when he was cut up by the victim in a car on the A46 at the Winthorpe roundabout. Coe began shouting at the victim, who had been with his wife in their car, then picked up the knife with a six-inch blade.

But 52-year-old Coe, of Radfield Road, Darwen, did not use his knife during the incident.

Nottingham Crown Court he actually had another unidentified “object” in his hand, not a knife, and threatened the victim with that. The blade fell out of his parked up lorry and he said he held it “for a couple of seconds” and did not threaten anyone with it.

Police attended and arrested Coe, a long distance driver for 30 years, at the scene on November 11, 2015. Judge John Burgess sentenced him for affray[3] on Monday. He told him, after a “bit of pushing and shoving”, he returned to his cab and got a knife he used in his business as a lorry driver.

The judge took into account Coe had been out of trouble of for 15 years and was in full-time work as he decided against sending him straight to prison.

He ordered the forfeiture of the knife, saying Coe would now be subject to a seven-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and must complete ten rehabilitation days and 120 hours of unpaid work. And he choose not to disqualify him from driving[5] because that work was his livelihood. Philip Plant, the solicitor-advocate representing Coe, who pleaded guilty, said his client carried the knife as part of his job as a lorry driver to cut ties on the lorry.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt with the knife”, he said.
