Lorry overturns on highway, hits traffic

Hundreds of commuters were caught in traffic snarls for over three hours when a lorry loaded with gravel overturned on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway near DAV School, Dera Bassi, here this morning.

The incident occurred around 8 am when the lorry, which was coming from the Zirakpur side, suddenly lost balance and overturned. The driver escaped unhurt. Being the morning peak hours, the Chandigarh-Ambala highway got choked with a large number of commuters getting stuck in traffic snarls.

The entire load of gravel from the lorry spilled on to both sides of the national highway, leaving commuters stranded for over three hours. Office-goers and students were the worst hit as they reached their destinations very late. Being aware of the village link roads, local commuters were seen taking alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Following the mishap, long queues of vehicles were seen on both sides of the highway. Angrez Singh, traffic in-charge, Dera Bassi, said the traffic coming from the Chandigarh side was diverted via Bhankarpur village. The police had to arrange two cranes to move the overturned lorry to one side of the road.

The traffic on the highway returned to normal by 12.30 pm, the traffic in-charge said.
