This footage shows the aftermath of a massive pileup which left 24 people dead and 35 injured The tragic traffic incident happened in the city of Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital when a lorry full of melons crashed into a bus at the weekend. It is alleged the lorry driver, named as 36-year-old Jose Eliseo Aguilar Meza, had tried to overtake on a “dangerous bend” and lost control, crashing into a bus full of people who were travelling in the opposite direction.

The bus then crashed into a wall, with many left dead.

Three of the victims have been named as 27-year-old Francis Etzequiel Funez Meza, 24-year-old Kaydin Ramirez Vasquez and 24-year-old Keydi Yosselin Ramirez Reyes, who was reportedly pregnant. Shaky footage has since been released to show the scene of the accident shortly after. People can be heard shouting and screaming in the footage as they try to help those injured.

Many can be seen lying on the ground, while they wait for emergency services to attend.

Police say they breathalysed the lorry driver, and he was not drunk, but confirmed he could face charges of homicide after reports were made to them that he had been speeding. The woman who filmed the scene can be heard trying to help some children who are stuck after being on the bus, saying: “Stay there my love. You are very small”, before telling others: “We have to help them.”

A young injured boy is then seen lying on the ground behind the vehicle with people in the background debating whether to move him in case he has a neck injury.

The woman filming is heard saying: “Give me the children, I will move them to the hospital” as children still trapped in the bus can be heard crying in the background. Emergency services arrived and shut off the road for seven hours as they dealt with the incident. A second video shows some of the injured being taken to hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
