M6 chaos: Motorway closed with commuters facing THREE hour delays

Commuters could be delayed for up to THREE hours after a diesel spillage on the M6 . There is severe congestion on the M6 south between junctions J11 and J6 on Tuesday morning[1] . Traffic was initially halted after a lorry and a car collided on the slip road at J6 around 7am on Tuesday morning.

Traffic is currently running past the scene via the hard shoulder and work is under way to clear the spillage and open lanes 1 and 2 past junction 6.

One lane had been closed on the approach to the accident but traffic has now been stopped while Highways England and West Midlands Fire Service assess a large diesel spill. Highways England said: “Our contractors have stopped traffic on #M6 S/B within J6 while they assess the large diesel spill. @WestMidsFire also now on scene.”

Birmingham Airport has issued a warning to travellers of delays after the HGV and car collided on the M6, J6, causing a large diesel fuel spillage. This is having a knock-on effect on nearby road and bus services.

There is congestion reported in West Bromwich, Handsworth, Great Barr, Perry Barr, Quinton, Edgbaston, Walsall, Smethwick and Erdington.

There’s also been a crash on Hagley Road West at the Bearwood Road junction, which is slowing things down even further.

Highways England operations manager Neil Taylor said: “We are working hard to get the carriageway completely opened as quickly as possible.

“We have a lane running past the scene but we’d advise motorists to plan their journeys and allow extra time.”
