One dead, one injured as mini lorry rams trailer on Chennai-Tiruchy highway

VILLUPURAM : Little did Balakrishnan know when he accepted the lift offered by his friend that it would be his last journey.

M Balakrishnan (22), a resident of Avaniyapuram in Madurai, who had gone to Chennai in search of a job, was planning a trip to his native when his friend S Sivaraj (20), from Azhagarkoil in Madurai, who was a lorry driver, told him that he was carrying a load to Madurai on Saturday night and asked him to tag along.

However, what would have been a fun ride turned tragic when their mini lorry rammed a tractor-trailer on Chennai-Tiruchy national highway, killing Balakrishnan on the spot and leaving Sivaraj grievously injured.

The accident took place in the wee hours of Saturday on Virudhachalam flyover in Ulundurpet. Sivaraj, who noticed the tractor, travelling from Madapattu to Tiruchy, only when he came close to it, took a sudden turn to avoid a collision.

However, the lorry hit the rear end of the trailer. The front cabin of the lorry was completely damaged in the impact, killing Balakrishnan on the spot.

Sivaraj suffered grievous injuries and was stuck inside the vehicle.

The Ulundurpet police have registered a case.
