Pedestrian dies after being hit by a lorry near Spaghetti Junction

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a lorry on a busy road near Spaghetti Junction[1] . The man was knocked down shortly before 3pm on Monday on Lichfield Road, near Salford Circus, in Erdington.[2] He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital[3] but later died.

West Midlands Police[4] say they are not naming the victim at this stage but are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Lichfield Road was closed at its junction with Salford Circus at Spaghetti Junction[5] while the emergency services, including the Midland Air Ambulance dealt with the incident. A west Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision between a pedestrian and a lorry in Aston yesterday.

“A man suffered fatal injuries after he was in collision with an artic lorry. He is not being named at this stage.

The road was closed at Lichfield Road and Cuckoo Bridge near Salford Circus for some time following the collision. “Anyone with any information should call the regional Collision Investigation Unit on 101.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crews arrived they found a man who had suffered very significant injuries. “Ambulance staff and the doctor carried out advanced life support and trauma care at the scene.

“He was anaesthetised before being taken on blue lights and with a police escort to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with the doctor continuing to treat the man en-route.

“Medics at the hospital were awaiting his arrival and continued his care.

Sadly, despite all of the efforts, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.”
