One man, who knew Mr Ahmed, said: “He was well known to people around here. “We would often see him on Cheetham Hill Road here.

He was a very elderly gentleman who had lived here for the last 30 or 40 years. “I saw it all happen. He was a family friend.

It was very sad.” The road was closed while crash investigators from Greater Manchester Police inspected the scene of the incident. A man has been arrested on suspicion on causing death by careless driving and remains in custody for questioning.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
