Police find 15 ‘Iraqi migrants’ hiding in fruit pallets at New Spitalfields Market

A lorry driver has been arrested[1] after 15 stowaways were found hiding inside fruit pallets in the back of a truck at an east London market. The group, who are believed to be from Iraq, were discovered in the rear of the vehicle by police in the early hours of Friday at New Spitalfields Market in Leyton.[2] Police said a family of five were taken to hospital for treatment.

Three people were arrested, including the driver of the lorry, on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry to the UK, officers said. It is believed the lorry had travelled to the UK from Spain with the group hiding in the back.

Following a call to Spittalfields market E10, 15 people were found inside a lorry from Spain. A family of 5 taken to hospital for treatment-

In a series of tweets, Waltham Forest borough officers said: “Following a call to New Spitalfields Market, E10, 15 people were found inside a lorry from Spain. “A family of five taken to hospital for treatment.

“Three more arrested inc the driver for facilitating illegal entry to the UK.

“Persons mainly from Iraq hid inside pallets of fruit.”
