COPS are warning drivers to take care after a series of smashes on icy roads this morning – as forecasters warn this weekend’s predicted whiteout could WIPE OUT the footie fixtures. Police in Dumfriesshire said the A75 was closed between Lockerbie and Bloomfield roundabouts after a smash while other drivers had crashed along the icy A747 near Glenluce.

And they tweeted motorists to take care in the region as the big freeze begins to bite. On the M74 the the northbound carriageway between Junction 15 and 16 was also shut due to an overturned HGV.

Meanwhile scores of cold weather deaths are feared in Scotland – after 1,023 more deaths than average were recorded in England and Wales in the week temperatures hit -5C in January, Office of National Statistics data showed. Temperatures are expected to plunge to their lowest levels in five years as a 1,500-mile wide mass of air dubbed the “Scandinavian shiver” moves in. And the Met Office warned the whiteout would wreak havoc with the Scottish Cup fixture list – plus cause huge travel problems for fans trying to get to games.

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: “Saturday looks the most widespread for snow showers. We couldn’t rule out snow just about anywhere in the UK.
“The snow showers will be most widespread and frequent in the East, with central parts certainly seeing some as they push into the West as well.
“There is potential for a couple of centimetres at lower levels, with inches over higher ground. But they will be showers, not a front, so they will hit some and miss others.
“Thursday and Friday nights look coldest.

We can’t say it won’t get to -12C in parts. We might not be a million miles away.
“Increasingly cold air is arriving from the east.”
