‘Stupid’ lorry driver Nigel Turner sentenced after pulling out a gun in B&Q car park in Colchester

A LORRY driver was chased by police after pulling out a gun in Colchester’s B&Q car park. Nigel Turner bought the weapon for a child and was showing it off to his friends when police were called. Fortunately it turned out to be an imitation firearm.

Turner, 55, of Furneaux Lane, Fingringhoe, admitted one count of possession of an imitation firearm in public at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Stephen Sparkes, prosecuting, said: “It was 11.30am on November 5 when a member of the public saw the defendant at B&Q Colchester and thought he was acting suspiciously. “They thought they saw what appeared to be a handgun.

“He was showing it off to other males in the group he was in.” Turner had driven off to Slough Lane, Elmstead, when he was ordered to stop by police and put his hands on the steering wheel. Armed support is believed to have been called.

Mr Sparkes said: “Officers approached the vehicle. “Inside the car in a carrier bag was the handgun with some ammo rounds. “It was a blank firing pistol not able to be converted into a live pistol.

“In interview he explained he bought it to give to his friend’s autistic son for Christmas.” Turner had fired some blanks but claimed his friend’s son would just have it on display. Peter Young, mitigating, said: “He knows it is a serious matter.

He made full admissions and co-operated with police. “As far as he was concerned it was a toy. “He fully understands how stupid he has been.”

District Judge John Woollard said: “This was incredibly stupid. “You got out what look like a revolver in a public car park.” He was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 80 hours unpaid work and a two month curfew from 7pm to 6am.

He was also ordered to pay costs and charges.
