Terrified drivers watch lorry crash off bridge onto A12 and burst into flames in horror smash

Terrified motorists watched in horror as a lorry crashed off a bridge onto the road in front of them and burst into flames causing traffic chaos. Images from the scene show the wreck of the vehicle blocking a section of the A12, near Witham, with one ambulance, three police cars and eight police bikes reported to be on the scene. Traffic queued for 13 miles back from the scene of the horror accident, with the Northbound carriageway only recently reopened as emergency services continue to deal with the incident.

So far there have been no reported injuries. Fire crews from Colchester, Witham and Chelmsford were called to the incident Wednesday at 3.41pm.

Paramedics were called to the scene at 3.49pm and had an ambulance crew on scene within six minutes. The East of England Ambulance Service sent an officer, rapid response vehicle and the Essex Air Ambulance to the scene, as well as the trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team.

Essex Police are appealing to the public to come forward with information about the shocking crash this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Essex Police tweeted the appeal for witnesses: “We are looking for drivers who may have witnessed the #A12 RTC this afternoon at #Witham.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Essex Police on 101.
