TS to offer relief to truck owners

Hyderabad: Following representations from the truck owners on addressing their long pending issue of border tax, the the Telangana government has offered to slash the tax and wants the Andhra Pradesh government also to pitch in and help the lorry owners. According to the transport department officials, Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy recently wrote to his counterpart in Andhra Pradesh offering concession to the lorry drivers in border tax by entering into a bilateral agreement. “Responding to representations of lorry drivers from both the States, we have written a letter to AP government to consider the long pending issues, which will give much relief to the lorry drivers,” said B Venkateshwarlu, Joint Transport Commissioner.

Once the agreement is signed, he said, governments from both the States will provide concession to the lorry drivers on border tax. At present, the transport vehicle owners pay Rs 1,600 for single entry which is valid for one week and Rs 4,700 for multiple entries valid for one month. We are paying at least Rs 50,000 per annum as boarder tax and we requested the government in AP to provide us some relief, said N Bhaskar Reddy, president, Telangana Lorry Owners Association, adding that they will be paying Rs 5,000 annual tax if the government agrees.

There are nearly 1.75 lakh commercial vehicles in the State, of which at least 30 per cent vehicles ply between AP and Telangana, he said. Vehicles from border districts, including Nalgonda, Khammam and Mahbubnagar are forced to pay the tax as most of their clients are from AP. If the agreement is signed, lorry owners from both the States will get ample relief, he added.

He pointed that AP government is collecting Rs 5,000 as annual tax from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and forcing the Telangana vehicles to pay Rs 50,000 per annum.
However, the transport officials said that they can’t provide concession to vehicles coming from AP, unless they agree to reciprocate.
