Wave for the dash cam – astonishing moment OAP on scooter goes wrong way at busy roundabout

AN amazing video shows a cheerfully waving pensioner on a mobility scooter going the wrong way at a busy roundabout – as an HGV roars past. The clip shows the senior citizen trundling along at barely 10mph against the flow of traffic. Despite the imminent danger, the OAP waves twice to the camera as he drives in front of the dash cam vehicle.

The footage was shot in Daventry, Northamptonshire, by Guntis Pigoznis, who said he was left “shocked” by the incident.

At the start of the video, shot on Tuesday, the dash cam vehicle slows down at the roundabout.

The man on the scooter can clearly be seen making an anti-clockwise right turn as an HGV thunders past with feet to spare. As several cars also pass in the opposite direction, the man remains unfazed, and makes his first wave to the camera. The man passes in front of a stunned Guntis and once again raises his hand to make a friendly wave.

Guntis explained he was travelling on the A425 at at the roundabout with London Road. “I was just a bit shocked because it is a busy roundabout. It shows there are a lot of crazy things going on, on roads.”

Guntis has gone on to make a parody of the video, which features Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg’s track ‘The Next Episode’ and has the words “Thug Life” come on to the screen as the man puts his hand up. He has also Photoshopped sunglasses and a cannabis joint on to the man’s face. A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said that the incident was not recorded on their log.

Manual wheelchairs and vehicles with an upper speed limit of 4 mph and are designed to be used on pavements but vehicles with upper speed limit of 8 mph are equipped to be used on the road as well as the pavement. There have been numerous incidents of mobility scooters on roads having clashes with traffic. In November last year, Labour peer Lord Taylor of Blackburn tragically died after after he was knocked off his mobility scooter by a van outside Parliament.

And in 2015 it was reported that such scooters were involved in four accidents every week on British roads.

In 2013, a video of a pensioner holding up a bus load of German tourists in Edinburgh on his 4mph mobility scooter went viral.
