Long delays on the A5 near Hinckley after five lorry smash on the M1

Drivers are facing major delays on the M1 and the A5 this afternoon after a multi-vehicle smash near junction 19 at Catthorpe. Two lanes have been closed and delays of an hour-and-a-half are being reported by Traffic England after five HGVs and two vans collided shortly before 11am Delays are building on the A5 towards Hinckley as drivers pour off the motorway to find an alternative route.

The lanes are expected to be closed until around 4.30pm and traffic is expected to return to normal by 5.30pm. It is not clear if anyone was injured in the smash. Motorists on social media expressed frustation with the delays as tailbacks stretched past the Catthorpe Interchange and junction 18 at Rugby.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said traffic was able to pass in one lane and that motorists were being made aware of the delays.
