This video shows the moment a vehicle caught fire in a car park at a service station on the M1[2] close to Derby. HGV driver David Matthew Owens captured the car as the flames took hold and it moved forward on its own accord and into a caravan which was parked nearby and which also was completely gutted in the blaze. It took place on the northbound section of the motorway at Trowell services, near Ilkeston,[3] shortly after noon on Friday.

The service station’s northbound side had to be blocked off due to the fire. The M1 service station between junction 25 and junction 26 remained off-limits until around 1.30pm, according to the Nottingham Post,[4] while fire crews from Long Eaton[5] and Castle Donington[6] stations put out the fire using two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.

Mr Owens said he was driving from Northampton to his home in Yorkshire and followed the “smoking car” into the services.

He said: “It must have been on fire underneath the engine. The bloke driving did the right thing and parked it in the middle of the car park away from the other cars and got out. “I went inside the services and when I came out I watched as the car jolted forwards and rolled down towards the caravan.

The flames then spread from the car to the caravan.”
