M5 traffic: Man who died on motorway after being struck by 'a number of vehicles' near Cullompton was originally a …

A man who died after being hit by several vehicles on the M5 was probably a passenger in a car. West Country roads faced a day of deadly chaos on Tuesday (February 13) after multiple crashes on the M5 and A30[1] , which led to two deaths. A collision in Somerset between Taunton and Wellington on the M5, on the same stretch of motorway where a Bridgwater woman died last week[2] , also led to a motorcyclist being taken to Musgrove Park hospital[3] with life-threatening injuries.

But it was a crash near Cullompton in Devon which led to a man’s death and a disruptive road closure which lasted for around nine hours. UPDATE – Police still trying to find out why body was on road and who he was[4]

Ch Insp Adrian Leisk has updated the public on an investigation into a death on the M5 near the Devon-Somerset border on February 13, 2018Ch Insp Adrian Leisk has updated the public on an investigation into a death on the M5 near the Devon-Somerset border on February 13, 2018

Police said yesterday (February 13) that the deceased had left his vehicle and was struck by multiple vehicles on the motorway. According to Devon Live[5] it’s believed the man had been a passenger in a car.

There is still no news on whether or not the man has been idenitified. A man in his 60s from a village in Somerset also died after the crash on the A30[6] at Upottery, near Honiton, again in Devon – just 20 minutes after the death on the M5. Speaking to Devon Live about the death on the M5, Ch Insp Adrian Leisk, head of roads policing across Devon, Cornwall and Dorset[7] , said: “We were called at around 6.45am this morning (February 13) to the scene of the incident.

“It is believed that a male who was in the carriageway was struck by a number of vehicles and that he was originally a passenger in a car. “We are still in the process of establishing the facts and seizing dash cam evidence which will help us build a greater picture and fuller understanding of what happened.”

The crash which killed a BMW driver on the A30 involved a collision with a 42-tonne truck, Ch Insp Leisk added. He said: “We are trying to speak to the driver of a tanker who may have witnessed the [A30] collision.

“We stress that they are a witness and we are looking for them to come forward to help build up the evidential picture of what happened.”

Update 8.45am:

Devon and Cornwall Police have released the following update on Twitter. The dead man has still not been identified.

Warning for West Country drivers

The crashes came on a morning of torrential rain and high winds. As well as the serious collisions on the M5 and A30, there were also numerous reports of crashes across Devon, according to Devon Live .

Fallen trees were a hazard for many motorists throughout Tuesday (February 13). And tractors had to step in to pull vehicles uphill on little local roads which ended up congested following diversions put in place as a result of the M5 and A30 closures.

“There have been some freak weather events this winter and what we are asking drivers to slow down and give yourself space and time to react,” added Ch Insp Leisk. “Be more aware around the changing weather conditions and the fact surface water will affect the car’s handling characteristics.

“Too often I see drivers making no compensation whatsoever for horrendous weather conditions and driving exactly as they would on a sunny July day. “Maybe not in excess of the speed limit but certainly inappropriately to the condtions. “Slow down and make sure you can finish the journey you started.”
