DALTON — A Pittsfield man died Tuesday night after a head-on collision on Route 9 at the intersection with Cleveland Road.

James Kerr, 51, was extricated from a vehicle at the scene and later pronounced dead at Berkshire Medical Center. Kerr was driving west in a red 2016 Chrysler sedan about 6:20 p.m. when he crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2014 Dodge truck driven by Peter Gagliardi, of Middlefield, according to Dalton Police Chief Jeffrey Coe. Members of the Dalton Rescue Squad freed Kerr, who was trapped in the vehicle, and he was transported to BMC, Coe said in an email.

Gagliardi, 50, was taken to BMC for minor injuries, and a passenger in his vehicle was not injured. Members of the Dalton Fire Department, Dalton Ambulance Squad, County Ambulance and Windsor Ambulance were called to the scene to assist. Route 9 was closed for about three hours.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, with assistance from state police detectives as well as the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
