Princess Diana's very special gift is being worn by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

When the young Diana got engaged to Prince Charles in 1981, the Queen Mother gifted her a stunning diamond brooch to mark the occasion. Diana was notably seen wearing the precious piece – called the Prince of Wales Feathers brooch – several times in public. The princess often styled it as a necklace.

The piece was a wedding gift to Princess Alexandra of Denmark from the “Ladies of Bristol” when she married the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) in 1863.

It is composed of an oval of 18 brilliant-cut diamonds accented with tiny emeralds, encircling the Prince of Wales ostrich feathers. It also has a scroll inscribed with the Prince of Wales’ motto “Ich Dien” (German for “I serve”). It was handed down to her daughter-in-law Queen Mary, then the Queen Mother.

And the Princess, who was very inventive with her jewellery, had a detachable emerald cabochon drop added to the lovely piece.

Camilla Parker-Bowles, 70, has been seen wearing the gift to Diana on numerous occasions since she married Prince Charles, 69, reports Express.co.uk. Camilla was first seen wearing the piece one year after she married Charles at a movie premiere. She was also seen wearing the brooch at the Cheltenham racecourse in 2012 and at the Royal Ascot in 2013.

A picture from the day was also used for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall’s Christmas Card.

The Daily Mail stated at the time: “It is understood that the prince was particularly keen for his new bride to wear the brooch because of its association with successive Princes of Wales.”

When Diana divorced Charles, the wedding present was taken back by the Royal Family, as it is an heirloom.

It is also likely that Kate Middleton will wear the piece too, as one day she will be the Princess of Wales.
